Chloride and Fluoride Traps
Problem
As renewable feedstocks become more important for energy production, the need for effective halide scavengers is growing. Halide contamination in vapor and liquid process streams usually comes from chlorides (like HCl) and sometimes from fluoride compounds. These impurities create serious challenges and must be removed to keep processes safe and products clean.

Sorbtech’s Solution
Halide compounds such as HCl are very polar and bond tightly to promoted aluminas and other oxides. Because of this, fixed-bed sorbents work well to trap and remove chloride and fluoride from hydrocarbon streams. Sorbent Technologies supplies promoted spherical activated aluminas that are widely used in oil and gas refining for this purpose.
Unlike membrane systems or amine treaters, fixed-bed oxides cost less, require simpler equipment, and install more easily. They also keep working even when water or CO₂ are present, which makes them more reliable under real process conditions.
Halide Control in Renewable Energy
Biomass-to-energy technologies fall into three main groups: thermal, biochemical, and chemical. Each produces useful products such as electricity, fuels, or chemical feedstocks. However, to be effective in the market, these biobased products must meet strict halide purity standards. Removing halides helps protect catalysts, improves product quality, and supports safer operations.
At Sorbent Technologies, we design and supply advanced materials for halide removal. We also provide system recommendations and design support to help operators choose the right solution for their process.

Typical contaminants to remove:
- halides, e.g., HCl, HF
- sulfur compounds, e.g. H2S, mercaptans
- nitrogen compounds, e.g., NH3, HCN
- heavy organic compounds, aka “tar”
