Chloride and Fluoride Traps by Sorbent Technologies

Problem

Increasing emphasis on using renewable feedstocks for energy production has created needs for effective halide scavengers. Halide contaminations in both vapor and liquid phase process streams are primarily from chloride e.g., HCl, and some fluoride compounds.

Solution

Halide compounds like HCl tend to be very polar and strongly adsorb on promoted aluminas and other promoted oxides. Fixed bed sorbents are proven, highly effective means for trapping and removing chloride and fluoride contaminants from many hydrocarbon steams. We offer promoted spherical activated aluminas which are widely used in large scale oil and gas refining processes for similar halide scavenging.

Adsorptive oxides fixed beds for halide removal are generally less capital intensive and more easily implemented than membrane or amine treaters. In addition, their adsorption efficiency is not adversely impacted by the presence of water or CO2.

Biomass-to-energy technologies can be broadly classified as either Thermal, Biochemical, or Chemical. Resulting products are useful for power generation / chemical feedstocks / transportation fuels. These biobased products can make important contributions to U.S. energy security but must meet halide purity standards for the intended uses. We are developing better tools to optimize materials design. System recommendations and design guidance is available at Sorbent Technologies.

Typical contaminants to remove:

  • halides, e.g., HCl, HF
  • sulfur compounds, e.g. H2S, mercaptans
  • nitrogen compounds, e.g., NH3, HCN
  • heavy organic compounds, aka “tar”
